Context of Psalms 106:36
34The Lord commanded his people to destroy the nations of Canaan, But they did not obey the Lord's command. 35Instead, they mixed with those nations and they learned their way of life. They worshipped their idols which caught them in a trap. 37They even killed their sons and their daughters as sacrifices for those idols of demons! 38Their sons and their daughters did not deserve to die, but they killed them as sacrifices for the idols of Canaan. Those murders made the land unclean.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 34-48Verses 34-48 The conduct of the Israelites in Canaan, and God's dealings with them, show that the way of sin is down-hill; omissions make way for commissions: when they neglected to destroy the heathen, they learned their works. One sin led to many more, and brought the judgments of God on them. Their sin was, in part, their own punishment. Sinners often see themselves ruined by those who led them into evil.
