Context of Leviticus 23:42
40On the first day, they must take fruit and leaves from the trees. Then for seven days they must praise the Lord. 41They must do this to worship the Lord for seven days of each year. They must obey this rule in the seventh month now, and for all the years to come. All Israel's people must live in huts for seven days. 43Your descendants in the future will know that God brought Israel's people out of Egypt. They will know that he caused them to live in huts as they travelled through the wilderness. I am the Lord, your God.’ 44Moses told the people all that the Lord had told him.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 42Booths - According to Jewish tradition, what were used at the Feast of Tabernacles were strictly “tabernacula,” structures of boards, with a covering of boughs. The “booth” in which the Israelite kept the Feast, and the “tent” which was his ordinary abode in the wilderness, had this in common - they were temporary places of sojourn, they belonged to camp-life. The seven days of abode in the booths of the festival was thus a fair symbol of the forty years…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 33-44Verses 33-44 In the feast of Tabernacles there was a remembrance of their dwelling in tents, or booths, in the wilderness, as well as their fathers dwelling in tents in Canaan; to remind them of their origin and their deliverance. Christ's tabernacling on earth in human nature, might also be prefigured. And it represents the believer's life on earth: a stranger and pilgrim here below, his home and heart are above with his Saviour. They would the more…Read the comment
