Context of Judges 6:18
16The Lord answered him, ‘Understand that I will be with you! You will destroy the Midianites as if they were only one man.’ 17Gideon replied, ‘If you are pleased with me, please do something special. I want to know that you really are the Lord who is speaking to me. Please stay here so that I can bring a gift for you.’ The Lord answered, ‘I will stay here until you come back.’ 19Gideon went home and he cooked a young goat. He also used an ephah of flour to make some flat bread. He put the meat in a basket and he put the soup in a pot. He took the food to the one who was sitting under the oak tree. 20God's angel said to him, ‘Put the meat and the bread on this rock. Pour the soup over them.’ Gideon did what the angel told him to do.

Commentaries on Judges 6:18
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 18And bring forth my present - My minchah ; generally an offering of bread, wine, oil, flour, and such like. It seems from this that Gideon supposed the person to whom he spoke to be a Divine person. Nevertheless, what he prepared and brought out appears to be intended simply as an entertainment to refresh a respectable stranger.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 18My present - My Minchah: the word used regularly, though not exclusively, for the meat and drink offering (Leviticus 2:1 note). Its double sense of an offering to God, and of a gift to man, suits the doubt in Gideon‘s mind as to who his visitor might be.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 11-24Verses 11-24 Gideon was a man of a brave, active spirit, yet in obscurity through the times: he is here stirred up to undertake something great. It was very sure that the Lord was with him, when his Angel was with him. Gideon was weak in faith, which made it hard to reconcile the assurances of the presence of God with the distress to which Israel was brought. The Angel answered his objections. He told him to appear and act as Israel's deliverer, there…Read the comment
