Context of Joshua 23:3
1Joshua became very old. The Lord had let the Israelite people live safely for many years. The other nations who lived near them did not attack them. 2One day, Joshua called all the leaders to meet with him. They were the leaders of Israel's tribes and clans, the judges and the officers. He said to them, ‘I am now very old. You yourselves have seen what the Lord has done to these other nations. It was the Lord who fought against them on your behalf. 4Remember how I have given land to each of your tribes. The land is between the Jordan River in the east, and the Mediterranean Sea in the west. It is land that belonged to different nations. Some of those people we have chased away, but some of them still remain in the land. 5The Lord himself will chase those people out of the land, so that you can live there. The Lord your God has promised you all this.

Commentaries on Joshua 23:3
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 3For the Lord your God is he that hath fought for you - There is much both of piety and modesty in this address. It was natural for the Israelites to look on their veteran, worn-out general, who had led them on from conquest to conquest, with profound respect; and to be ready to say, "Had we not had such a commander, we had never got possession of this good land." Joshua corrects this opinion, and shows them that all their enemies had been defeated…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2-3The leaders of Israel witnessed God's actions for them and against their enemies. During the lives of these leaders who lived longer than Joshua, Israel remained faithful to God (Judges 2:7).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 33. ye have seen all that the Lord your God hath done unto all these nations because of you--The modesty and humility of Joshua are remarkably displayed at the commencement of this address. Dismissing all thoughts of his personal services, he ascribed the subjugation and occupation of Canaan entirely to the favoring presence and aid of God; and in doing so, he spoke not more piously than truly. This had been promised (De 1:30; 3:22); and the reality of the…Read the comment
