Context of Joshua 13:21
19Kiriathaim, Sibmah and Zereth Shahar. Zereth was on a hill in the middle of the valley. 20Their land included Beth Peor, and the sides of Pisgah mountain, and Beth Jeshimoth town. Moses gave them all the towns on the flat land. He gave them all the land of Sihon, king of the Amorites. Sihon had ruled from Hebron. But Moses had won the fight against him and the Midianite kings, Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba. These kings had ruled with Sihon and they lived in his land. 22The Israelites had killed the prophet Balaam, son of Beor, when they killed soldiers in the battle. He had used magic to help Balak fight against Israel. 23The border of Reuben's land was the Jordan River. Moses gave these towns and their villages to the tribe of Reuben, family by family.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 21The princes of Midian - See the history of this war, Numbers 31:1, etc.; and from that place this and the following verse seem to be borrowed, for the introduction of the death of Balaam here seems quite irrelevant.Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 7-33Verses 7-33 The land must be divided among the tribes. It is the will of God that every man should know his own, and not take that which is another's. The world must be governed, not by force, but right. Wherever our habitation is placed, and in whatever honest way our portion is assigned, we should consider them as allotted of God; we should be thankful for, and use them as such, while every prudent method should be used to prevent disputes about…Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-331. Now Joshua was old and stricken in years--He was probably above a hundred years old; for the conquest and survey of the land occupied about seven years, the partition one; and he died at the age of one hundred ten years (Jos 24:29). The distribution, as well as the conquest of the land, was included in the mission of Joshua; and his advanced age supplied a special reason for entering on the immediate discharge of that duty; namely, of allocating Canaan…Read the comment
