Context of Joshua 11:12
10At that time, Hazor was the most important city among all those kingdoms that fought against the Israelites. So Joshua turned back and attacked Hazor. He killed its king. 11The Israelites killed everyone who lived there. Nothing in the city was left alive. They burned the city and destroyed it. Joshua took all these cities and he killed all their kings. He destroyed them all, as the Lord's servant Moses had told him to do. 13But the Israelites did not burn the cities that were built on small hills. Hazor was the only city like that which Joshua did burn. 14The Israelites took for themselves all the animals and the valuable things from those cities. But they killed all the people. They did not let any of them live.

Commentaries on Joshua 11:12
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 10-14Verses 10-14 The Canaanites filled up the measure of their iniquity, and were, as a judgment, left to the pride, obstinacy, and enmity of their hearts, and to the power of Satan; all restraints being withdrawn, while the dispensations of Providence tended to drive them to despair. They brought on themselves the vengeance they justly merited, of which the Israelites were to be executioners, by the command the Lord gave to Moses.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-16The detailed accounts of Joshua’s campaign in southern Canaan show that the Israelites needed God's help to succeed (chapters 6–10). The same was true for the northern campaign (chapter 11). So those details were not needed here.Read the comment
