Context of Joel 3:20
18In that day new wine will run from the mountains. And milk will run from the hills. All the valleys of Judah will have rivers of water. Water will come from the house of the Lord and it will water the Valley of Acacias. 19But Egypt will be empty, and Edom will become a desert. They attacked the people in Judah, and they killed them for no good reason. My people will always live in Jerusalem and Judah. 21I will forgive all the wrong things that they have done.’ The Lord has made his home in Zion!

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 20But Judah shall dwell for ever - The true Church of Christ shall be supported, while all false and persecuting Churches shall be annihilated. The promise may also belong to the full and final restoration of the Jews, when they shall dwell at Jerusalem as a distinct people professing the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 20Judah shall dwell for ever - Not earthly Judah, nor earthly Jerusalem, for these must come to an end, together with the earth itself, of whose end the prophets well knew. It is then the one people of God, the true Judah, the people who praise God, the Israel, which is indeed Israel. Egypt and Edom and all the enemies of God should come to an end; but His people shall never come to an end. “The gates of hell shall not prevail against her.” The enemy shall…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 18-21Verses 18-21 There shall be abundant Divine influences, and the gospel will spread speedily into the remotest corners of the earth. These events are predicted under significant emblems; there is a day coming, when every thing amiss shall be amended. The fountain of this plenty is in the house of God, whence the streams take rise. Christ is this Fountain; his sufferings, merit, and grace, cleanse, refresh, and make fruitful. Gospel grace, flowing from…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 20-21The end of Joel’s prophecy is the opposite of its beginning. In Joel 1:1–20, Judah’s future seemed uncertain. Plague and drought, signs of divine judgment, threatened Judah’s survival. Now Joel concludes with the divine promise that Judah and Jerusalem will last through all generations. God's people in every era find security in the hope that his kingdom will rule over heaven and earth (see also Isaiah 9:6–7; Daniel 2:44; 7:13–14).Read the comment
