Context of Job 42:7
5In the past, I had heard about you from other people. Now I have seen you for myself. 6So I am ashamed of the things that I said. I sit here in dirt and in ashes to show you that I am very sorry.’ When the Lord had spoken to Job, he said this to Eliphaz, the man from Teman: ‘I am very angry with you and with your two friends. The things that my servant Job has said about me are true. But the things that you said were not right. 8You three men must now go to Job. Take seven bulls and seven male sheep with you. Burn them as sacrifices for yourselves. After you have done that, my servant Job will pray for you. I will answer his prayer. Then I will not punish you as you deserve because of your foolish words. My servant Job has spoken the truth about me, but you have not.’ 9So Eliphaz, the man from Teman, Bildad, the man from Shuah, and Zophar, the man from Naamah, did what the Lord had told them to do. And the Lord answered Job's prayer.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7After the Lord had spoken these words - Those recorded at Job 40:7-14; he said to Eliphaz, who was the eldest of the three friends, and chief speaker: Ye have not spoken of me - right. Mr. Peters observes, "It will be difficult to find any thing in the speeches of Eliphaz and his companions which should make the difference here supposed, if we set aside the doctrine of a future state; for in this view the others would speak more worthily of God than Job…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7And it was so, that after the Lord had spoken these words unto Job - Had the matter been left according to the record in Job 42:6, a wholly erroneous impression would have been made. Job was overwhelmed with the conviction of his guilt, and had nothing been said to his friends, the impression would have been that he was wholly in the wrong. It was important, therefore, and was indeed essential to the plan of the book, that the divine judgment should be…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 7-9Verses 7-9 After the Lord had convinced and humbled Job, and brought him to repentance, he owned him, comforted him, and put honour upon him. The devil had undertaken to prove Job a hypocrite, and his three friends had condemned him as a wicked man; but if God say, Well done, thou good and faithful servant, it is of little consequence who says otherwise. Job's friends had wronged God, by making prosperity a mark of the true church, and affliction a…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7Eliphaz the Temanite was the spokesperson for the friends, probably because of he was older. Eliphaz had a false claim that his advice came from visions of prophecy (4:12–16). Now God spoke to him, but not to support his message. Unlike his three friends, Job spoke accurately about God (compare 13:7–10). Job’s direct questions were more effective in finding out the truth about God than the friends’ shallow definitions of doctrine.Read the comment

Their spirit towards Job was unkindly, and to justify themselves in their unkindliness they used false arguments (Job 13:7); (namely, that calamities always prove peculiar guilt); therefore, though it was "for God" they spake thus falsely, God "reproves" them, as Job said He would (Job 13:10). as…Read the comment
