Context of Job 38:31

29Who is a mother to the ice? Who gives birth to the frost that makes the air so cold? 30It causes the water to become as hard as stone. The water of the sea also becomes ice. You cannot make the stars of the Pleiades stay in their places. You cannot change the shape of Orion. 32You bring out the groups of stars for people to see at different times of the year. You cannot put the stars of the Great Bear and the Little Bear in their right places in the sky. 33You do not know the rules that the stars above obey. You cannot make the earth obey those rules.

Commentaries on Job 38:31

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 31Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades - The Pleiades are a constellation in the sign Taurus. They consist of six stars visible to the naked eye; to a good eye, in a clear night, seven are discernible; but with a telescope ten times the number may be readily counted. They make their appearance in the spring. Orion may be seen in the morning, towards the end of October, and is visible through November, December, and January; and hence, says Mr…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 31Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades? - The seven stars. On the meaning of the word used here (כימה kı̂ymâh ), see the notes at Job 9:9. In regard to the meaning of the word rendered “sweet influences,” there has been considerable variety of interpretation. The Septuagint renders it, “Dost thou understand the band ( ́ desmon ) of Pleiades?” The Hebrew word (מעדנה ma‛ădannâh ) is naturally derived from a word signifying “pleasures,” or…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 25-41Verses 25-41 Hitherto God had put questions to Job to show him his ignorance; now God shows his weakness. As it is but little that he knows, he ought not to arraign the Divine counsels; it is but little he can do, therefore he ought not to oppose the ways of Providence. See the all-sufficiency of the Divine Providence; it has wherewithal to satisfy the desire of every living thing. And he that takes care of the young ravens, certainly will not be wanting…Read the comment
