Context of Job 38:29
27The rain falls on dry ground where nothing grows. It causes grass to grow there again. 28Do you know if the rain has a father? Who is a father to the dew? Who is a mother to the ice? Who gives birth to the frost that makes the air so cold? 30It causes the water to become as hard as stone. The water of the sea also becomes ice. 31You cannot make the stars of the Pleiades stay in their places. You cannot change the shape of Orion.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 29Out of whose womb came the ice? - Ice is a solid, transparent, and brittle body, formed of water by means of cold. Some philosophers suppose that ice is only the re-establishment of water in its natural state; that the mere absence of fire is sufficient to account for this re-establishment; and that the fluidity of water is a real fusion, like that of metals exposed to the action of fire; and differing only in this, that a greater portion of fire is…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 29Out of whose womb came the ice? - That is, who has caused or produced it? The idea is, that it was not by any human agency, or in any known way by which living beings were propagated. And the hoary frost of heaven - Which seems to fall from heaven. The sense is, that it is caused wholly by God; see the notes at Job 37:10.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 25-41Verses 25-41 Hitherto God had put questions to Job to show him his ignorance; now God shows his weakness. As it is but little that he knows, he ought not to arraign the Divine counsels; it is but little he can do, therefore he ought not to oppose the ways of Providence. See the all-sufficiency of the Divine Providence; it has wherewithal to satisfy the desire of every living thing. And he that takes care of the young ravens, certainly will not be wanting…Read the comment
