Context of Job 20:16
14But those things will become poison that hurts him. Like bitter food that goes into his stomach. 15Like a person who is sick and loses the food from his stomach, God will cause the wicked person to lose all his riches. He will drink the poison of snakes. A dangerous snake will bite him and it will kill him. 17He will never enjoy the good things that the earth provides. He will not enjoy the honey and milk which pours out like rivers of water. 18He will have to give back everything that he owned. He will not enjoy the things that he has worked for.

The poison is called the gall of asps, it being anciently supposed that the poison of serpents consists in their gall, which is thought to be copiously exuded when those animals are enraged; as it has been often seen that their bite is not…Read the comment

It would seem that the ancients regarded the poison of the serpent as deadly, however, it was taken into the system. They seem not to have been aware that the poison of a wound may be sucked out without injury to him who does it; and that it is necessary that the poison…Read the comment
