Context of Job 14:21
19Stones become sand when water pours over them. Floods wash away soil. In the same way, you remove hope from a person's life. 20Finally, you bring his life to an end. He leaves this world. You change his face in death and you send him away. If his sons become famous, he does not know about it. If they become ashamed, he does not know that either. 22A dead person thinks only about himself. He feels his own pain and he is very sad.’

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 21His sons come to honor - When dead, he is equally indifferent and unconscious whether his children have met with a splendid or oppressive lot in life; for as to this world, when man dies, in that day all his thoughts perish.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 21His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not - He is unacquainted with what is passing on the earth. Even should that occur which is most gratifying to a parent‘s heart; should his children rise to stations of honor and influence, he would not be permitted to enjoy the happiness which every father feels when his sons do well. This is suggested as one of the evils of death. They are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them - He is not permitted to…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 16-22Verses 16-22 Job's faith and hope spake, and grace appeared to revive; but depravity again prevailed. He represents God as carrying matters to extremity against him. The Lord must prevail against all who contend with him. God may send disease and pain, we may lose all comfort in those near and dear to us, every hope of earthly happiness may be destroyed, but God will receive the believer into realms of eternal happiness. But what a change awaits the…Read the comment
