Context of Jeremiah 42:6
4The prophet Jeremiah replied, ‘I agree to do that. I will pray to the Lord your God, as you have asked me to do. I will tell you everything that the Lord says to answer you. I will not hide anything from you.’ 5They said to Jeremiah, ‘We promise to do everything that the Lord sends you to say to us. We ask the Lord to listen to our promise. May he punish us if we do not do what we have promised to do. We have asked you to pray to the Lord our God for us. We will obey what he tells us to do. We will obey him whether we like what he tells us, or whether we do not like it. We will obey him because we want to enjoy a good life.’ 7Ten days after that, the Lord spoke to Jeremiah. 8So Jeremiah told Kareah's son Johanan, the other army officers and all the people to come to him. That included everyone, important people and ordinary people.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 6We - The form used here occurs nowhere else in the Old Testament, but is the regular form of the pronoun in the Talmud. It is one out of many instances of Jeremiah using the popular instead of the literary language of his times.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5-6These people might have sensed that Jeremiah doubted their sincerity. They responded by making a serious promise. They committed to obey the Lord's instructions and agreed to accept punishment if they broke the promise. They felt sure that the Lord's answer would be what they wanted to hear.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 66. evil--not moral evil, which God cannot command (Jas 1:13), but what may be disagreeable and hard to us. Piety obeys God, without questioning, at all costs. See the instance defective in this, that it obeyed only so far as was agreeable to itself (1Sa 15:3, 9, 13-15, 20-23).Read the comment
