Context of Isaiah 8:3
1The Lord said to me, ‘Get a large board to write on. Then write clear words on it. Write this name: “Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz.” 2I will call Uriah the priest and Jeberekiah's son, Zechariah, to come to see this. They are honest people who will say what is true.’ Then I slept with my wife, the prophetess. She became pregnant and she gave birth to a son. The Lord said to me, ‘Call his name Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz. 4Before the child knows how to say “my father” or “my mother”, the king of Assyria will attack Damascus and Samaria. His army will carry away the valuable things from those cities. That is why your son's name must be Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz.’ 5The Lord spoke to me again.

Commentaries on Isaiah 8:3
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 3Then said the Lord - The name thus given was to be emblematic of a particular event - that Assyria would soon take away the spoil of Damascus and Samaria. It is not remarkable that the name Immanuel should also be given to the same child, as signifying the presence and protection of God in defending the nation from the invaders; see the notes at Isaiah 7:14-15. Calvin thinks that all this passed in a vision before the prophet; but it has every mark of…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 3Like the name Immanuel (Isaiah 7:14), Maher-shalal-hash-baz is symbolic. This child might have partially fulfilled the Immanuel prophecy (see study note on Isaiah 7:14). The ultimate fulfillment of the Immanuel prophecy happened with the birth of Jesus (Matthew 1:22–23).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 33. prophetess--perhaps the same as the "virgin" (Is 7:14), in the interim married as Isaiah's second wife: this is in the primary and temporary sense. Immanuel is even in this sense distinct from Maher-shalal-hash-baz. Thus nineteen months at least intervene from the prophecy (Is 7:14), nine before the birth of Immanuel, and ten from that time to the birth of Maher-shalal-hash-baz: adding eleven or twelve months before the latter could cry, "Father" (Is…Read the comment
