Context of Isaiah 61:9
7You will not be ashamed any more. Instead, you will receive twice as much blessing. People will not say that you are useless. Instead, you will live happily on your own land. Yes, my people will have twice the crops from their land, And so they will always be very happy. 8I, the Lord, love justice. I hate it when people rob others, or they do other wrong things. Because I am faithful, I will give help to my people. I will make a covenant with them that will continue for ever. Their descendants will be famous among the other nations. Everyone who sees them will know that the Lord has blessed them.’ 10I am very happy, because of what the Lord, my God, has done. I have so much joy! He has given salvation to me, like clothes that I can wear all the time. I have his righteousness as my coat! He makes me handsome, like a bridegroom who wears a priest's hat. He makes me beautiful, like a bride who wears her jewels. 11The Almighty Lord will cause his righteousness to grow everywhere. It will grow like crops in the fields, and like plants that grow in a garden. Then his people will praise him, and all the nations will see it!

Commentaries on Isaiah 61:9
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9Their seed shall be known among the Gentiles - Both Jews and Gentiles are to make but one fold under one shepherd, Christ Jesus. But still, notwithstanding this, they may retain their peculiarity and national distinction; so that though they are known to be Christians, yet they shall appear to be converted Jews. After their conversion to Christianity this will necessarily be the case for a long time. Strange nations are not so speedily amalgamated, as to…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9And their seed - The figure here is taken from the feelings of a parent who desires his children to be esteemed, and who regards it as an honor that they become so distinguished that their fame extends to distant lands. Shall be known - Shall be distinguished or honored. For this use of the word known,‘ see Psalm 67:2; Psalm 76:1; Psalm 79:10. And their offspring - (See the notes at Isaiah 48:19). - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 4-9Verses 4-9 Promises are here made to the Jews returned out of captivity, which extend to all those who, through grace, are delivered out of spiritual thraldom. An unholy soul is like a city that is broken down, and has no walls, like a house in ruins; but by the power of Christ's gospel and grace, it is fitted to be a habitation of God, through the Spirit. When, by the grace of God, we attain to holy indifference as to the affairs of this world; when…Read the comment
