Context of Isaiah 38:10
8You can see the sun's shadow when it falls on the stairs that King Ahaz built. The Lord will cause the shadow to go back ten steps on these stairs.’ Then the shadow did go back ten steps! 9When Hezekiah became better from his disease, he wrote this song: I thought that I might die in the middle of my life. I thought that I would go into the deep hole of death, before I had lived all the years of my life. 11I thought, ‘I will not see the Lord again, while I live in this world. I will no longer see the people who live in the world. I will no longer live among them.’ 12My home here has gone, as easily as they pull down a shepherd's tent. God has cut off my life, like a piece of cloth that they have just made. They cut it off and they roll it up. As quickly as day becomes night, God brings my life to an end.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 10I said - Probably the words I said‘ do not imply that he said or spoke this openly or audibly; but this was the language of his heart, or the substance of his reflections. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 9-22Verses 9-22 We have here Hezekiah's thanksgiving. It is well for us to remember the mercies we receive in sickness. Hezekiah records the condition he was in. He dwells upon this; I shall no more see the Lord. A good man wishes not to live for any other end than that he may serve God, and have communion with him. Our present residence is like that of a shepherd in his hut, a poor, mean, and cold lodging, and with a trust committed to our charge, as the…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 10go through the gates of Sheol: This image comes from an ancient belief that people enter death through gates (see Isaiah 14:9). Old Testament believers did not understand the afterlife as the New Testament describes it. They saw it as a shadowy place where all the dead gathered, and where no one praised God (see Isaiah 38:18; Psalms 88:10; 115:17).Read the comment
