Context of Isaiah 10:23
21A few of Jacob's descendants will remain, and they will return to serve the mighty God. 22Israel's people are now very many, as many as the sand on the shore of the sea. But only a few will remain to return. The Lord has decided to destroy you, people of Israel. His punishment is fair and right. The Lord Almighty will destroy the whole land. He is ready to do that, as he has promised. 24So this is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘My people who live in Zion, do not be afraid of the Assyrian army. They will hurt you, like someone who hits you with a heavy stick. They will be cruel to you like the people in Egypt were long ago. 25But soon I will be angry with you no longer. Instead, I will be angry with the Assyrians, and I will be ready to destroy them.’

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 23For the Lord God of hosts - Note, Isaiah 1:9. Shall make a consumption - The Hebrew of this verse might be rendered, for its destruction is completed, and is determined on; the Lord Yahweh of hosts will execute it in the midst of the land.‘ Our translation, however, expresses the force of the original. It means that the destruction was fixed in the mind or purpose of God, and would be certainly executed. The translation by the Septuagint, which is…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 20-34Verses 20-34 By our afflictions we may learn not to make creatures our confidence. Those only can with comfort stay upon God, who return to him in truth, not in pretence and profession only. God will justly bring this wasting away on a provoking people, but will graciously set bounds to it. It is against the mind and will of God, that his people, whatever happens, should give way to fear. God's anger against his people is but for a moment; and when that…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 20-27In the middle of Assyrian oppression, there was still hope for the remnant. This passage explains more clearly the meaning of the name Shear-jashub. The name means “a remnant will return” (Isaiah 10:21; see 7:3; 8:18). The promise showed that God would not destroy all his people. Some would return to him and live under his care.Read the comment
