Context of Isaiah 10:23
21The remnant shall return, the remnant of Jacob, unto the mighty God. 22For though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, [only] a remnant of them shall return: the consumption determined shall overflow in righteousness. For a consumption, and [one] determined, will the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, accomplish in the midst of all the land. 24Therefore thus saith the Lord, Jehovah of hosts: O my people that dwellest in Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrian; he shall smite thee with a rod, and shall lift up his staff against thee, after the manner of Egypt: 25for yet a very little while, and the indignation shall be accomplished, and mine anger, in their destruction.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 23For the Lord God of hosts - Note, Isaiah 1:9. Shall make a consumption - The Hebrew of this verse might be rendered, for its destruction is completed, and is determined on; the Lord Yahweh of hosts will execute it in the midst of the land.‘ Our translation, however, expresses the force of the original. It means that the destruction was fixed in the mind or purpose of God, and would be certainly executed. The translation by the Septuagint, which is…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 20-34Verses 20-34 By our afflictions we may learn not to make creatures our confidence. Those only can with comfort stay upon God, who return to him in truth, not in pretence and profession only. God will justly bring this wasting away on a provoking people, but will graciously set bounds to it. It is against the mind and will of God, that his people, whatever happens, should give way to fear. God's anger against his people is but for a moment; and when that…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 20-27In the middle of Assyrian oppression, there was still hope for the remnant. This passage explains more clearly the meaning of the name Shear-jashub. The name means “a remnant will return” (Isaiah 10:21; see 7:3; 8:18). The promise showed that God would not destroy all his people. Some would return to him and live under his care.Read the comment
