Context of Hosea 8:8
6That idol is not a true god! An Israelite worker with special skills made it. Samaria's idol of a calf will break into pieces! 7Like a farmer, Israel's people have planted the wind. So their harvest will be a strong storm! The crops that grow in their fields will not have any grain. So they will not be able to make flour for bread. Even if the crops do make some grain, foreign people will take it for themselves. Israel will become lost among the other nations. It will be like a useless pot that nobody needs. 9Israel's rulers have gone to Assyria for help. They are like a wild donkey that goes here and there. Ephraim's people have paid money to get help from other nations. as if they are paying for lovers. 10Yes, they have paid money to get friends who will help them. But I will soon bring them together to punish them. A great king will be cruel to them and they will receive much pain.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8Now shall they be among the Gentiles - They shall be carried into captivity, and there be as a vessel wherein there is no pleasure; one soiled, unclean, infectious, to be despised, abhorred, not used. The allusion is to a rotten, corrupted skin-bottle; a bottle made of goat, deer, or calf hide, still commonly used in Asia and Africa. Some of them are splendidly ornamented. This is the case with one now before me made of a goat's skin well dressed…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8Israel is swallowed up - Not only shall all which they have, be swallowed up by the enemy, but themselves also; and this, not at any distant time, but “now.” “Now,” at a time all but present, “they shall be among the Gentiles, as a vessel wherein is no pleasure,” or, quite strictly, “Now they have become, among the Gentiles.” He speaks of what should certainly be, as though it already were. “A vessel wherein is no pleasure,” is what Paul calls “a vessel…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 5-10Verses 5-10 They promised themselves plenty, peace, and victory, by worshipping idols, but their expectations came to nothing.
