Context of Genesis 36:7
5Oholibamah gave birth to three sons: Jeush, Jalam and Korah. These were Esau's sons that were born in the land of Canaan. 6Esau went to a land that was a long way from his brother Jacob. He took with him his wives, his sons and daughters and everyone in his house. He took his animals and all the things that he had got while he lived in Canaan. Esau and Jacob both had too many animals to live together in the same place. There was not enough land to give food to all their animals. 8So Esau went to live in the hills of Seir. He was also called Edom. 9This is a list of Esau's descendants, the Edomites. They lived in the hill country of Seir.

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 6-76-7. Esau ... went into the country from the face of his brother Jacob--literally, "a country," without any certain prospect of a settlement. The design of this historical sketch of Esau and his family is to show how the promise (Ge 27:39, 40) was fulfilled. In temporal prosperity he far exceeds his brother; and it is remarkable that, in the overruling providence of God, the vast increase of his worldly substance was the occasion of his leaving Canaan and…Read the comment
