- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 14Wherefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi - It appears, from Genesis 16:7, that Hagar had sat down by a fountain or well of water in the wilderness of Shur, at which the Angel of the Lord found her; and, to commemorate the wonderful discovery which God had made of himself, she called the name of the well ראי לחי באר beer -lachai -roi, "A well to the Living One who seeth me." - Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 14-15The name Beer-lahai-roi means “well of the Living One who sees me.” This name and Ishmael were a message and a rebuke for Abram and Sarai (see 16:11). God notices suffering and listens to those crying out in need. Sarai and Abram should have prayed instead of trying to fulfill the promise themselves by following a social custom (compare 25:21).
