Context of Ezekiel 16:44
42I will continue to punish you until I am no longer angry with you. I will not be upset or angry any more. 43The Almighty Lord says this: I am punishing you as you deserve for all the things that you have done. You have forgotten how I helped you when you were young. You have done many disgusting things and you have also lived like a prostitute. Look! Everyone says that this proverb is true about you: A daughter will do the same things that her mother does. 45Yes, you are a true daughter of your mother! Your mother hated her husband and her children. And you are the same as your sisters too. They also hated their husbands and their children. Your mother was a Hittite and your father was an Amorite. 46Your older sister was Samaria. She and her daughters lived north of you. Your younger sister was Sodom. She and her daughters lived south of you.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 44As is the mother, so is her daughter - בתה כאמה keimmah bittah, "As the mother, her daughter." As is the cause, so is the effect. As is the breeding, so is the practice. A silken purse cannot be made out of a swine's ear. What is bred in the bone seldom comes out of the flesh. All such proverbs show the necessity of early holy precepts, supported by suitable example.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 44The Jews prided themselves on being under the special protection of Yahweh. In the downfall of their neighbors, they found only additional grounds for confidence in their own security. Ezekiel now in severe rebuke places them on an equality with Sodom and Samaria. Alike have been their sins, except that Judah has had the preeminence in guilt. Alike shall be their punishment.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 44-45Jerusalem’s “parents” were a Hittite and an Amorite. Hittites and Amorites were previous occupants of Canaan who were cut off from the land because of their sins (compare Genesis 15:16). The pagan city of Jerusalem was captured and became part of Israel during David's time (2 Samuel 5:6–10). Jerusalem’s later actions matched her family background. She behaved in a way that fit her heredity (family line and ancestry). In other words, her conduct was…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 4444. As ... mother ... her daughter--"Is," and "so is," are not in the original; the ellipsis gives the proverb (but two words in the Hebrew) epigrammatic brevity. Jerusalem proved herself a true daughter of the Hittite mother in sin (Eze 16:3).Read the comment
