Context of Ezekiel 11:22
20Then they will know my rules and my laws. They will be careful to obey them. They will be my people and I will be their God. 21But it will be different for those who continue to worship their disgusting idols. I will punish them as they deserve because of the evil things that they have done. That is what the Almighty Lord says.’ Then the cherubs lifted up their wings to fly. The wheels were at their sides. And the bright glory of Israel's God was above them. 23The glory of the Lord rose up and it went away from the city. It stopped over a mountain on the east side of the city. 24In the vision, a spirit lifted me up and took me back to Babylon. I returned to the Israelites who were prisoners there. That was the end of the vision.

Commentaries on Ezekiel 11:22
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 22-25Verses 22-25 Here is the departure of God's presence from the city and temple. It was from the Mount of Olives that the vision went up, typifying the ascension of Christ to heaven from that very mountain. Though the Lord will not forsake his people, yet he may be driven away from any part of his visible church by their sins, and woe will be upon them when He withdraws his presence, glory, and protection.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 22-23Ezekiel’s vision of the temple (Ezekiel 8–11) ends with the chariot carrying God's glory away from the temple. The Lord's glory would leave the defiled Jerusalem, travel east to Babylon with the exiles, and share in their suffering (Ezekiel 11:16). God's glory paused briefly above the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem, as if waiting for judgment to fall on the rebellious city. After departing to the east, it would return from the east to the renewed…Read the comment
