Context of Exodus 16:22
20But some of the people did not listen to Moses. They kept part of the food until the morning. But worms appeared in it, and it began to have a bad smell. Then Moses was angry with those people. 21Each morning, everyone picked up as much food as they needed. But when the sun became hot, the food would melt away. On the sixth day, the Israelites picked up twice as much food. They picked up four litres for each person. Then the leaders of the people told Moses what they had done. 23Moses said to them, ‘This is what the Lord has said: “Tomorrow is a special day of rest. It is a Sabbath day, to worship the Lord. Today, you must bake any food that you want to bake. Boil the meat that you want to boil. Keep until the morning whatever food you do not eat today.” ’ 24So they kept some food until the morning, as Moses had said. This time, the food did not have a bad smell and there were no worms in it.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 22On the sixth day they gathered twice as much - This they did that they might have a provision for the Sabbath, for on that day no manna fell, Exodus 16:26, Exodus 16:27. What a convincing miracle was this! No manna fell on the Sabbath! Had it been a natural production it would have fallen on the Sabbath as at other times; and had there not been a supernatural influence to keep it sweet and pure, it would have been corrupted on the Sabbath as well as on…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 22Twice as much bread - See Exodus 16:5. From this passage and from Exodus 16:5 it is inferred that the seventh day was previously known to the people as a day separate from all others, and if so, it must have been observed as an ancient and primeval institution.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 22-31Verses 22-31 Here is mention of a seventh-day sabbath. It was known, not only before the giving of the law upon mount Sinai, but before the bringing of Israel out of Egypt, even from the beginning, Ge 2:3. The setting apart one day in seven for holy work, and, in order to that, for holy rest, was ever since God created man upon the earth, and is the most ancient of the Divine laws. Appointing them to rest on the seventh day, he took care that they should…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 21-30The Sabbath was a day set apart for the Lord (16:23). It was also a gift from the Lord to his people (16:29). Rest and worship are not meant to be an obligation, but a privilege. However, because people often try to meet their needs in our own way, God commands rest and worship (16:28).Read the comment

They are found in certain seasons in the places through which the Israelites passed, being migratory birds, and they were probably brought to the camp by "a wind from the Lord" as on another occasion (Nu 11:31). and in…Read the comment
