Context of Exodus 15:17
15The rulers of Edom will be afraid. The leaders of Moab will shake with fear. The people who live in Canaan will become weak. 16They will all be afraid. Because of your great power they will want to run away. But they cannot move! They will remain still, like stones, until your people go on past them. They will stand and watch as the people you have saved, Lord, pass by. You will bring your people in safely. You will bring them to live on your own mountain. Lord, that is the place that you have prepared for your home. It is the holy place that you have built, Lord. 18The Lord will rule as king for ever! 19Pharaoh's horses, his chariots and his soldiers went into the sea. Then the Lord made the waters of the sea come back over them. But the Israelites walked through the middle of the sea on dry ground.’

And plant them - Give them a fixed habitation in Canaan, after their unsettled wandering life in the wilderness. In the mountain - Meaning Canaan, which was a very mountainous country, Deuteronomy 11:11; or probably Mount Zion, on which the temple was built. - Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 1-18Verses 1-18 With the deliverance of Israel is associated the development of the national poetry, which finds its first and perfect expression in this magnificent hymn. It was sung by Moses and the people, an expression which evidently points to him as the author. That it was written at the time is an assertion expressly made in the text, and it is supported by the strongest internal evidence. In every age this song gave the tone to the poetry of Israel…Read the comment

Then sang Moses and the children of Israel--The scene of this thanksgiving song is supposed to have been at the landing place on the eastern shore of the Red Sea, at Ayoun Musa, "the fountains of Moses." They are situated somewhat farther northward along the shore than the opposite point from which the Israelites set out. But the line of the people would be extended during the passage, and one extremity of it would reach as far north as these…Read the comment
