Context of Exodus 12:7
5The lamb that you choose must have nothing wrong with it. It must be a male lamb that is one year old. It can be either a young sheep or a young goat. 6Keep the lamb safe until the 14th day of this month. Then every Israelite family must kill their lamb in the evening. They must take some of its blood. They must put the blood on the wood that is round the door of their house. They must put it on each side of the door and above the door. They must do this in every house where they will eat a lamb. 8That night, they must cook the meat over the fire. They must eat it immediately, with bitter herbs and with bread that has no yeast in it. 9You must cook the meat before you eat it. Cook it over the fire. Do not cook it in water. Cook the whole lamb, with its head, its legs and the inside parts of its body.

Commentaries on Exodus 12:7
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7Take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts - This was to be done by dipping a bunch of hyssop into the blood, and thus sprinkling it upon the posts, etc.; see Exodus 12:22. That this sprinkling of the blood of the paschal lamb was an emblem of the sacrifice and atonement made by the death of Jesus Christ, is most clearly intimated in the sacred writings, 1 Peter 1:2; Hebrews 9:13, Hebrews 9:14; Hebrews 8:10. It is remarkable that no blood was…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7The upper door post - Or lintel, Exodus 12:23. This direction was understood by the Hebrews to apply only to the first Passover: it was certainly not adopted in Palestine. The meaning of the sprinkling of blood is hardly open to question. It was a representation of the offering of the life, substituted for that of the firstborn in each house, as an expiatory and vicarious sacrifice.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7blood: God could not simply spare his people from this plague as he had with the others. Death rules in the world because of sin. In light of God's justice, sin cannot be ignored. He must punish or atone for it. Blood represents life (Leviticus 17:11). So, it is the only acceptable way to forgive sins (Hebrews 9:22). As Deuteronomy 6:9 suggests, doorframes represent the entirety of life as the place of entering and exiting.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 77. take of the blood, and strike it on the two side-posts, &c.--as a sign of safety to those within. The posts must be considered of tents, in which the Israelites generally lived, though some might be in houses. Though the Israelites were sinners as well as the Egyptians, God was pleased to accept the substitution of a lamb--the blood of which, being seen sprinkled on the doorposts, procured them mercy. It was to be on the sideposts and upper doorposts…Read the comment
