Context of Deuteronomy 30:19
17But you will have trouble if you turn away from God and you do not obey him. If you decide to serve other gods and to worship them, 18you will certainly come to an end. After you go across the Jordan River, you will not live very long in that land. That is what I am telling you today. Today, I want the sky and the earth to hear what I have said to you. I have told you what you may choose. You may choose life or death. You may choose the Lord to bless you or to curse you. Choose life today, so that you and your descendants will live! 20Yes, love the Lord your God. Obey him and serve him faithfully. He is the one who gives you life. He will let you live for a long time in the land that he is giving to you. That is the land that he promised to your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 15-20Verses 15-20 What could be said more moving, and more likely to make deep and lasting impressions? Every man wishes to obtain life and good, and to escape death and evil; he desires happiness, and dreads misery. So great is the compassion of the Lord, that he has favoured men, by his word, with such a knowledge of good and evil as will make them for ever happy, if it be not their own fault. Let us hear the sum of the whole matter. If they and theirs would…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 19life and death, blessing and cursing: This pairing of words shows a close connection. Life is connected to blessing, and death is connected to curse. It is loss of the land, suffering, and separation from God’s favor.Read the comment

The choice was left to them, and in urging upon them the inducements to a wise choice, Moses warmed as he proceeded into a tone of solemn and impressive earnestness similar to that of…Read the comment
