Context of Deuteronomy 23:24
22You may choose not to promise any gift. That is not a sin. 23But whatever you promise to do, you must be careful to do it. If you choose to promise a gift to the Lord your God, give it soon. If you go into your neighbour's vineyard, you may eat some of the grapes. You may eat as many grapes as you want, but do not carry any away in a basket. 25If you go into your neighbour's field of grain, you may eat some of it. You may pick some grain with your hands, but do not use a knife to cut it down.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 15-25Verses 15-25 It is honourable to shelter and protect the weak, provided they are not wicked. Proselytes and converts to the truth, should be treated with particular tenderness, that they may have no temptation to return to the world. We cannot honour God with our substance, unless it be honestly and honourably come by. It must not only be considered what we give, but how we got it. Where the borrower gets, or hopes to get, it is just that the lender…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 24your neighbor’s vineyard: In a way, God owned all the land and gave it to people. So, no one could claim it as only theirs. But renters had rights to privacy and some control over their land. People could enter the land, but not to steal. People could pick a few grapes or grain kernels to eat while passing by (see Matthew 12:1–8; Mark 2:23–28; Luke 6:1–5).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 24-2524-25. When thou comest into thy neighbour's vineyard, then thou mayest eat grapes thy fill at thine own pleasure--Vineyards, like cornfields mentioned in the next verse [De 23:25], were often unenclosed. In vine-growing countries grapes are amazingly cheap; and we need not wonder, therefore, that all within reach of a person's arm, was free; the quantity plucked was a loss never felt by the proprietor, and it was a kindly privilege afforded to the poor…Read the comment
