Context of 2 Samuel 18:14
12But the man replied, ‘I would never hurt the king's son, even for a gift of 1,000 silver coins. We all heard the king give this command to you, Abishai and Ittai. He said, “Keep the young man Absalom safe, because he is my son.” 13If I had killed Absalom, my own life would be in danger. The king knows everything that happens! You would not have tried to save me from the king's punishment.’ Joab said, ‘I cannot stay here while you talk like this.’ So he took three spears and he went to the tree where Absalom was hanging. While Absalom was still alive, Joab pushed the spears into Absalom's heart. 15Then ten of Joab's own guards came around Absalom. They knocked him down and they killed him. 16Then Joab made a sound with his trumpet to stop the battle. So his soldiers stopped chasing after Israel's soldiers.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 14I may not tarry thus with thee - He had nothing to say in vindication of the purpose he had formed. Thrust them through the heart of Absalom - He was determined to make sure work, and therefore he pierced his heart. Joab should have obeyed the king's commandment: and yet the safety of the state required the sacrifice of Absalom. But independently of this, his life was quadruply forfeited to the law: - In having murdered his brother Amnon. In having…Read the comment

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 14thrust them through the heart of Absalom: Earlier, Joab acted as a peacemaker between David and Absalom (2 Samuel 14). - Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1414. he took three darts ... and thrust them through the heart of Absalom--The deed, partially done by Joab, was completed by his bodyguard. Being a violation of the expressed wish, as well as of all the fond paternal feelings of David, it must have been deeply offensive to the king, nor was it ever forgotten (1Ki 2:5); and yet there is the strongest reason for believing that Joab, in doing it, was actuated by a sincere regard to the interests of David…Read the comment
