Context of 2 Kings 10:2
1Ahab had 70 sons who lived in Samaria. So Jehu wrote letters and he sent them to Samaria. He sent them to Jezreel's officers and leaders, as well as to the men who took care of Ahab's sons. This was what the letter said: ‘When this letter reaches you, your master's sons will be with you. You also have his chariots and horses in a strong city. And you have weapons. 3Choose the best person to be king from among your master's sons. Make him your king instead of his father. Then prepare to fight on behalf of your master's family.’ 4But the letter made the officers in Samaria very afraid. They said, ‘Even two kings could not win against Jehu. So we can never fight against him and win!’

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 2A fenced city also - All here seems to refer to Samaria alone; in it were the magazines and implements of war, etc. No reader need be told that these letters were all ironical. It was the same as if he had said, "Ye have no means of defense; Israel is with me: if you yield not up yourselves and the city, I will put you all to the sword.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 2A fenced city - Or, “fenced cities.” If Samaria had refused to acknowledge Jehu, many other Israelite towns would have been sure to follow the example.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2-5Jehu's message about the city's military strength to protect Ahab's remaining family was actually a war declaration. The leaders of Samaria understood this. Jehu led Israel's main army and had already shown his power and ruthlessness at Jezreel. The leaders were so scared that they agreed to follow all of Jehu's orders.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-172Ki 10:1-17. Jehu Causes Seventy of Ahab's Children to Be Beheaded. 1-4. Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria--As it appears (2Ki 10:13), that grandsons are included it is probable that this number comprehended the whole posterity of Ahab. Their being all assembled in that capital might arise from their being left there on the king's departure for Ramoth-gilead, or from their taking refuge in some of the strongholds of that city on the news of Jehu's…Read the comment
