Context of 2 Chronicles 8:3
1Solomon was building the Lord's temple and the king's palace for 20 years. 2After that, he built again the towns that King Hiram had given to him. He sent Israelites to live in them. Then Solomon went to Hamath-Zobah and he took it for Israel. 4He made the buildings in Tadmor strong again. That was a town in the wilderness. He did the same thing for the towns that he had built in Hamath region to store things. 5He built again Higher Beth-Horon and Lower Beth-Horon. He made those cities strong. He built walls around them with strong gates.

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 3-63-6. And Solomon went to Hamath-zobah--Hamath was on the Orontes, in Coele-Syria. Its king, Toi, had been the ally of David; but from the combination, Hamath and Zobah, it would appear that some revolution had taken place which led to the union of these two petty kingdoms of Syria into one. For what cause the resentment of Solomon was provoked against it, we are not informed, but he sent an armed force which reduced it. He made himself master also of…Read the comment
