I pray that Israel's God will give you what you have asked him for.’ Hannah said to him, ‘I will try to do what pleases you, sir.’ Then Hannah went away and she ate some food. Her face was not sad now. 19Elkanah and his family got up early the next morning and they worshipped the Lord. Then they went back to their home in Ramah. Elkanah had sex with his wife Hannah. She said, ‘His name is Samuel because I asked the Lord for him.’

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 18A beautiful example of the composing influence of prayer. Hannah had cast her burden upon the Lord, and so her own spirit was relieved of its load. She now returned to the family feast, and ate her portion with a cheerful heart. Acts 2:46-47. The word “sad” is not in the Hebrew text, but it fairly supplies the meaning intended.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 9-18Verses 9-18 Hannah mingled tears with her prayers; she considered the mercy of our God, who knows the troubled soul. God gives us leave, in prayer, not only to ask good things in general, but to mention that special good thing we most need and desire. She spoke softly, none could hear her. Hereby she testified her belief of God's knowledge of the heart and its desires. Eli was high priest, and judge in Israel. It ill becomes us to be rash and hasty in…Read the comment

This mistaken impression was immediately removed, and, in the words, "God grant," or rather, "will grant," was followed by an invocation which, as Hannah regarded it in the light of a prophecy pointing to the accomplishment of her earnest desire, dispelled her sadness, and…Read the comment
