Context of 1 Kings 9:26
24Solomon had built a palace for his wife, Pharaoh's daughter. When the palace was ready, she came up from the City of David. After that, Solomon built the Millo. 25Three times every year Solomon offered burnt offerings and friendship offerings as sacrifices to the Lord. He did this on the altar that he had built for the Lord. With these offerings, he also burned incense to worship the Lord. So the temple became the place to worship the Lord. King Solomon also built ships at Ezion-Geber. This place is near Elath in Edom, on the shore of the Red Sea. 27Hiram had sailors who knew how to sail ships on the sea. He sent some of these men to work with Solomon's sailors. 28They sailed to Ophir and they brought back about 14 tons of gold. They gave it to King Solomon.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 26A navy of ships - Literally, אני oni, a ship: in the parallel place, 2 Chronicles 8:17, it is said that Hiram sent him אניות oniyoth, ships; but it does not appear that Solomon in this case built more than one ship, and this was manned principally by the Tyrians.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 26On Ezion-geber and Eloth, see the notes to marginal references. As the entire tract about Elath (Akaba) is destitute of trees, it is conjectured that the wood of which Solomon built his fleet was cut in Lebanon, floated to Gaza by sea, and thence conveyed across to Ezion-geber, at the head of the E anitic Gulf, by land carriage. (Compare 2 Chronicles 2:16.)Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 15-28Verses 15-28 Here is a further account of Solomon's greatness. He began at the right end, for he built God's house first, and finished that before he began his own; then God blessed him, and he prospered in all his other buildings. Let piety begin, and profit follow; leave pleasure to the last. Whatever pains we take for the glory of God, and to profit others, we are likely to have the advantage. Canaan, the holy land, the glory of all lands, had no gold…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 26-28The seaport of Ezion-geber was on the Gulf of Aqaba, which connects to the Red Sea. The exact location of Ophir is unknown, but it might have been in southwestern Arabia, eastern Africa, or India. The mention of gold and other valuable goods (see 1 Kings 10:11–12) highlights its importance for trade.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 2626. Ezion-geber, which is beside Eloth--These were neighboring ports at the head of the eastern or Elanitic branch of the Red Sea. Tyrian ship carpenters and sailors were sent there for Solomon's vessels (see on 2Ch 8:17, 18). Ezion-geber--that is, "the giant's backbone"; so called from a reef of rocks at the entrance of the harbor. Eloth--Elim or Elath; that is, "the trees"; a grove of terebinths still exists at the head of the gulf.Read the comment
