Context of 1 Kings 22:53
51When Jehoshaphat had ruled Judah for 17 years, Ahab's son Ahaziah became the king of Israel in Samaria. Ahaziah ruled Israel as king for two years. 52He did things that the Lord said were evil. He lived in the way that his father and mother had lived. He caused the Israelites to do bad things, as Nebat's son Jeroboam had done. Ahaziah served Baal as his god and he worshipped him. He made the Lord, Israel's God, very angry, as his father had also done.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 51-53Verses 51-53 Ahaziah's reign was very short, not two years; some sinners God makes quick work with. A very bad character is given of him; he listened not to instruction, took no warning, but followed the example of his wicked father, and the counsel of his more wicked mother, Jezebel, who was still living. Miserable are the children who not only derive a sinful nature from their parents, but are taught by them to increase it; and most unhappy parents are…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 51-53The sad story of Ahaziah's rule in Israel continues in 2 Kings 1:1–18. He followed the evil ways of his parents, Ahab and Jezebel (1 Kings 21:25–26). He worshiped Baal (2 Kings 1:2, 16) and supported the state religion started by Jeroboam I (1 Kings 12:28–32). Ahaziah’s rise to power and character summary conclude Ahab's story in 1 Kings and smoothly transition to the ongoing story of the divided kingdom in 2 Kings.Read the comment
