Context of 1 Chronicles 7:3
1Issachar had four sons. They were Tola, Puah, Jashub and Shimron. 2Tola's sons were Uzzi, Rephaiah, Jeriel, Jahmai, Ibsam and Samuel. They were leaders of their clans. Among Tola's descendants there were 22,600 brave soldiers when David was king. Uzzi's son was Izrahiah. Izrahiah's sons were Michael, Obadiah, Joel and Isshiah. All those five men in Uzzi's family were leaders. 4The books of their clans show that they had many wives and sons. They had 36,000 men who were ready to fight in the army. 5The books of the clans of Issachar show that they had 87,000 brave soldiers.

Commentaries on 1 Chronicles 7:3
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 3The sons of Izrahiah - five - There are, however, only four names in the text. Instead of five, the Syriac and Arabic read four. If five be the true reading, then Izrahiah must be reckoned with his four sons.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-40This chapter provides the genealogies of the remaining tribes of Israel. The sections on the tribes of Issachar, Benjamin, and Asher may come from a military census. These lists are almost the same length, use military terms, record the father's houses, and do not mention settlements. The tribes of Zebulun and Dan are completely omitted, and Naphtali has only a short record.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 33. five: all of them chief men--Four only are mentioned; so that as they are stated to be five, in this number the father, Izrahiah, must be considered as included; otherwise one of the names must have dropped out of the text. They were each at the head of a numerous and influential division of their tribe.Read the comment
