Context of 1 Chronicles 4:9
7The sons of Ashhur and his wife Helah were: Zereth, Izhar, Ethnan 8and Koz. Koz became the father of Anub, Hazzobebah and the clans of Harum's son, Aharhel. Another of Judah's descendants was called Jabez. People respected him more than his brothers. His mother called him Jabez, because she said, ‘I had a lot of pain at his birth.’ 10Jabez prayed to Israel's God for help. He said, ‘Please bless me very much and give me more land. Please take care of me so that nothing hurts me and I do not have pain.’ God did what Jabez had prayed for. 11Kelub, Shuhah's brother, became the father of Mehir. Mehir became the father of Eshton.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9And Jabez was more honorable - This whole account is variously understood by some of the principal versions. I shall subjoin a translation of each. Septuagint. - "And Igabes was more glorious than his brethren; and his mother called his name Igabes, saying, I have brought thee forth as Gabes. And Igabes invoked the God of Israel, saying, If in blessing thou wilt bless me, and enlarge my borders, and thy hand be with me, and wilt give me understanding not…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9It is remarkable that Jabez should be introduced without description, or patronymic, as if a well-known personage. We can only suppose that he was known to those for whom Chronicles was written, either by tradition, or by writings which have perished. In 1 Chronicles 4:10 Jabez alludes to his name, “sorrowful” (margin): “Grant that the grief implied in my name may not come upon me!”Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 9-10The section about Jabez stands alone, allowing the Chronicler to explain his name's origin. Jabez is not mentioned earlier, although it is also the name of a town where some of Hur's son Salma's descendants lived (1 Chronicles 2:55). Jabez likely got his name because he caused his mother pain, fulfilling Eve's curse (Genesis 3:16). Despite his name being a curse, he was more honorable than his brothers, and his prayer changed his life's outcome. The…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 9-109-10. Jabez--was, as many think, the son of Coz, or Kenaz, and is here eulogized for his sincere and fervent piety, as well, perhaps, as for some public and patriotic works which he performed. The Jewish writers affirm that he was an eminent doctor in the law, whose reputation drew so many scribes around him that a town was called by his name (1Ch 2:55); and to the piety of his character this passage bears ample testimony. The memory of the critical…Read the comment
