Context of Psalms 96:4
2Sing unto Jehovah, bless his name; publish his salvation from day to day. 3Declare his glory among the nations, his wondrous works among all the peoples. For Jehovah is great and exceedingly to be praised; he is terrible above all gods. 5For all the gods of the peoples are idols; but Jehovah made the heavens. 6Majesty and splendour are before him; strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.

Commentaries on Psalms 96:4
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 4He is to be feared above all gods - I think the two clauses of this verse should be read thus: - Jehovah is great, and greatly to be praised. Elohim is to be feared above all. I doubt whether the word אלהים Elohim is ever, by fair construction, applied to false gods or idols. The contracted form in the following verse appears to have this meaning.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 4For the Lord is great - Yahweh is great. See the notes at Psalm 77:13. This verse is taken literally from 1 Chronicles 16:25. And greatly to be praised - Worthy of exalted praise and adoration. He is to be feared above all gods - He is to be reverenced and adored above all that are called gods. Higher honor is to be given him; more lofty praise is to be ascribed to him. He is Ruler over all the earth, and has a claim to universal praise. Even if it were…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 4great is the LORD … greatly to be praised: The poet praises the Lord above all gods (Psalm 95:3) and nations (99:2). The Lord inspires more awe than anyone or anything else (Psalm 76:7, 12; 89:7; 99:3; 111:9). He is beyond human possession or comprehension. The story of what he does to redeem his people causes them to praise him.Read the comment
