Context of Psalms 96:4
2Sing to praise the Lord's great name! Every day, tell people the message that he has rescued us. 3Tell the other nations that he is very great. Tell all of them about the great things that he has done. Yes, the Lord is great! Everyone should praise him as he deserves. People should respect him with fear, more than all other gods. 5All the other nations' gods are useless idols. But the Lord made the heavens. 6We see that he is a very great king. His holy home is full of his power and his beauty.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 4He is to be feared above all gods - I think the two clauses of this verse should be read thus: - Jehovah is great, and greatly to be praised. Elohim is to be feared above all. I doubt whether the word אלהים Elohim is ever, by fair construction, applied to false gods or idols. The contracted form in the following verse appears to have this meaning.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 4For the Lord is great - Yahweh is great. See the notes at Psalm 77:13. This verse is taken literally from 1 Chronicles 16:25. And greatly to be praised - Worthy of exalted praise and adoration. He is to be feared above all gods - He is to be reverenced and adored above all that are called gods. Higher honor is to be given him; more lofty praise is to be ascribed to him. He is Ruler over all the earth, and has a claim to universal praise. Even if it were…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 4great is the LORD … greatly to be praised: The poet praises the Lord above all gods (Psalm 95:3) and nations (99:2). The Lord inspires more awe than anyone or anything else (Psalm 76:7, 12; 89:7; 99:3; 111:9). He is beyond human possession or comprehension.
