Context of Psalms 18:15
13And Jehovah thundered in the heavens, and the Most High uttered his voice: hail and coals of fire. 14And he sent his arrows, and scattered [mine enemies]; and he shot forth lightnings, and discomfited them. And the beds of the waters were seen, and the foundations of the world were uncovered at thy rebuke, Jehovah, at the blast of the breath of thy nostrils. 16He reached forth from above, he took me, he drew me out of great waters: 17He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them that hated me; for they were mightier than I.

Commentaries on Psalms 18:15
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 15The channels of water were seen - This must refer to an earthquake; for in such cases, the ground being rent, water frequently gushes out at the fissures, and often rises to a tremendous height. Whole rivers were poured out of the chasms made by the earthquake in Jamaica, A. D. 1694; and new lakes of water were formed, covering a thousand acres of land!Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 15Then the channels of waters were seen - In 2 Samuel 22:16 this is, “And the channels of the sea appeared.” The idea is that, by the driving of the storm and tempest, the waters were driven on heaps, leaving the bottom bare. In the place before us the word used, “waters” - מים mayim - would denote waters of any kind - seas, lakes, rivers; in the corresponding place in 2Samuel, the word used - ים yâm - denotes, properly, the sea or the ocean. The word…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7-15The psalmist describes the Lord coming down from heaven to earth. This moment includes powerful signs such as earthquakes, fire, smoke, darkness, and rain. All creation trembles when God appears. The psalm shows God as the Divine Warrior (a title that describes God fighting for his people, see Psalm 97:2–5) and as the Judge who rules with justice (see 50:1–6).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1515. The tempest of the air is attended by appropriate results on earth. The language, though not expressive of any special physical changes, represents the utter subversion of the order of nature. Before such a God none can stand.Read the comment
