Context of Psalms 18:15
13The Lord also thundered in the heavens, And the Most High uttered His voice, Hailstones and coals of fire. 14He sent out His arrows and scattered them; And He sent an abundance of lightning flashes and confused and routed them [in defeat]. Then the stream beds of the waters appeared, And the foundations of the world were laid bare At Your rebuke, O Lord, At the blast of the breath of Your nostrils. 16He reached from on high, He took me; He drew me out of many waters. 17He rescued me from my strong enemy, And from those who hated me, for they were too strong for me.

Commentaries on Psalms 18:15
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 15The channels of water were seen - This must refer to an earthquake; for in such cases, the ground being rent, water frequently gushes out at the fissures, and often rises to a tremendous height. Whole rivers were poured out of the chasms made by the earthquake in Jamaica, A. D. 1694; and new lakes of water were formed, covering a thousand acres of land!Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 15Then the channels of waters were seen - In 2 Samuel 22:16 this is, “And the channels of the sea appeared.” The idea is that, by the driving of the storm and tempest, the waters were driven on heaps, leaving the bottom bare. In the place before us the word used, “waters” - מים mayim - would denote waters of any kind - seas, lakes, rivers; in the corresponding place in 2Samuel, the word used - ים yâm - denotes, properly, the sea or the ocean. The word…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7-15The psalmist describes the Lord coming down from heaven to earth. This moment includes powerful signs such as earthquakes, fire, smoke, darkness, and rain. All creation trembles when God appears. The psalm shows God as the Divine Warrior (a title that describes God fighting for his people, see Psalm 97:2–5) and as the Judge who rules with justice (see 50:1–6).Read the comment
