Context of Mark 14:51
49I was daily with you teaching in the temple, and ye did not seize me; but [it is] that the scriptures may be fulfilled. 50And all left him and fled. And a certain young man followed him with a linen cloth cast about his naked [body]; and [the young men] seize him; 52but he, leaving the linen cloth behind [him], fled from them naked. 53And they led away Jesus to the high priest. And there come together to him all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes.

Commentaries on Mark 14:51
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 51A certain young man - Probably raised from his sleep by the noise which the rabble made who came to apprehend Jesus, having wrapped the sheet or some of the bed-clothing about him, became thereby the more conspicuous: on his appearing, he was seized; but as they had no way of holding him, but only by the cloth which was wrapped round him, he disengaged himself from that, and so escaped out of their hands. This circumstance is not related by any other of…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 43-52Verses 43-52 See the notes at Matthew 26:47-57. Mark 14:45 Master, Master - As if expressing great joy that he had found him again. Mark 14:51 A certain young man - Who this was we have no means of determining, but it seems not improbable that he may have been the owner of the garden, and that he may have had an understanding with Jesus that he should visit it for retirement when he withdrew from the city. That he was not one of the apostles is clear. It…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 43-52Verses 43-52 Because Christ appeared not as a temporal prince, but preached repentance, reformation, and a holy life, and directed men's thoughts, and affections, and aims to another world, therefore the Jewish rulers sought to destroy him. Peter wounded one of the band. It is easier to fight for Christ than to die for him. But there is a great difference between faulty disciples and hypocrites. The latter rashly and without thought call Christ Master…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 51-52The account of the arrest of Jesus ends with a note about an unnamed young man. There is no clear theological reason given for why Mark includes this detail. One possible explanation is that it is a personal detail from Mark himself, but this cannot be confirmed.Read the comment
