Context of Leviticus 25:16

14And if ye sell ought unto your neighbour, or buy of your neighbour's hand, ye shall not overreach one another. 15According to the number of years since the jubilee, thou shalt buy of thy neighbour; according to the number of years of the produce, he shall sell unto thee. According to the greater number of the years, thou shalt increase the price thereof; and according to the fewness of years, thou shalt diminish the price of it; for it is the number of crops that he selleth unto thee. 17And ye shall not oppress one another; but thou shalt fear thy God; for I am Jehovah your God. 18And ye shall do my statutes, and observe mine ordinances and do them: thus shall ye dwell in your land securely.

This sound was to be made on the evening of the great day of atonement; for the proclamation of gospel liberty and salvation results from the sacrifice of the Redeemer. It was provided that the lands should not be sold away from their families. They could only be disposed of, as it were, by leases till the year of jubilee, and then returned to the owner or his…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 15-16the number of years: The law did not allow permanent sale of the land. It belonged to God, and Israel was simply allowed to use it (Leviticus 25:23). If the owner had to give up the land because of financial problems, he could lease it for up to forty-nine years, until the next Jubilee. The price depended on the lease length. At the end of that period, the land returned to the original owner's family.Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 8-238-11. thou shalt number seven sabbaths of years--This most extraordinary of all civil institutions, which received the name of "Jubilee" from a Hebrew word signifying a musical instrument, a horn or trumpet, began on the tenth day of the seventh month, or the great day of atonement, when, by order of the public authorities, the sound of trumpets proclaimed the beginning of the universal redemption. All prisoners and captives obtained their liberties…Read the comment
