Context of Leviticus 16:4
2and Jehovah said to Moses, Speak unto Aaron thy brother, that he come not at all times into the sanctuary inside the veil before the mercy-seat which is upon the ark, that he die not; for I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy-seat. 3In this manner shall Aaron come into the sanctuary: with a young bullock for a sin-offering, and a ram for a burnt-offering. A holy linen vest shall he put on, and linen trousers shall be upon his flesh, and he shall be girded with a linen girdle, and with the linen mitre shall he be attired: these are holy garments; and he shall bathe his flesh in water, and put them on. 5And of the assembly of the children of Israel shall he take two bucks of the goats for a sin-offering, and one ram for a burnt-offering. 6And Aaron shall present the bullock of the sin-offering, which is for himself, and make atonement for himself, and for his house.

Commentaries on Leviticus 16:4
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 4He shall put on the holy linen coat - He was not to dress in his pontifical garments, but in the simple sacerdotal vestments, or those of the Levites, because it was a day of humiliation; and as he was to offer sacrifices for his own sins, it was necessary that he should appear in habits suited to the occasion. Hence he has neither the robe, the ephod, the breastplate, the mitre, etc.; these constituted his dress of dignity as the high priest of God…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 4The high priest when he changed his dress on this day was required to bathe himself. In his “golden garments” he had, on this day, and for the previous week, to offer the regular daily sacrifices, and to perform the other sacerdotal duties of the sanctuary, which were usually performed by a common priest. The dress of white linen, which he now put on, appears to have been like the ordinary dress of the common priests, except in the substitution of a linen…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 4During the Day of Atonement ceremony, the high priest wore simple linen clothes instead of his usual robes. This probably symbolized the humility everyone should have on this solemn day. The high priest stood in front of God as the representative of the people. But he had nothing to boast about for himself or them. But when he stood in front of the people for God, his official robes showed God's glory and splendor (Leviticus 16:23).Read the comment

He was not to attire himself on that occasion in the…Read the comment
