Context of Jonah 2:4
2and he said: I cried by reason of my distress unto Jehovah, and he answered me; Out of the belly of Sheol cried I: thou heardest my voice. 3For thou didst cast me into the depth, into the heart of the seas, And the flood was round about me: All thy breakers and thy billows are gone over me. And I said, I am cast out from before thine eyes, Yet will I look again toward thy holy temple. 5The waters encompassed me, to the soul: The deep was round about me, The weeds were wrapped about my head. 6I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; The bars of the earth [closed] upon me for ever: But thou hast brought up my life from the pit, O Jehovah my God.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 4I am cast out of Thy sight - , literally, “from before Thine eyes.” Jonah had willfully withdrawn from standing in God‘s presence. Now God had taken him at his word, and, as it seemed, cast him out of it. David had said in his haste, “I am cut off.” Jonah substitutes the stronger word, “I am cast forth,” driven forth, expelled, like the “mire and dirt” Isaiah 57:20 which the waves drive along, or like the waves themselves in their restless motion Isaiah…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 4As Jonah was about to drown, he called out for help, life, and God's renewed presence. It is ironic that Jonah mentioned God driving him away, as Jonah himself aimed to flee to Tarshish (Jonah 1:3). I will look once more: Jonah was either confident he would be rescued and worship again in the temple in Jerusalem, or he was calling to the Lord in his temple from the sea (compare Jonah 2:7).Read the comment
