Context of Job 13:23
21Withdraw thy hand far from me; and let not thy terror make me afraid: 22Then call, and I will answer; or I will speak, and answer thou me. How many are mine iniquities and sins? Make me to know my transgression and my sin. 24Wherefore dost thou hide thy face, and countest me for thine enemy? 25Wilt thou terrify a driven leaf? and wilt thou pursue dry stubble?

Commentaries on Job 13:23
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 23How many are mine iniquities - Job being permitted to begin first, enters immediately upon the subject; and as it was a fact that he was grievously afflicted, and this his friends asserted was in consequence of grievous iniquities, he first desires to have them specified. What are the specific charges in this indictment? To say I must be a sinner to be thus afflicted, is saying nothing; tell me what are the sins, and show me the proofs.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 23How many are mine iniquities and sins? - Job takes the place of the plaintiff or accuser. He opens the cause. He appeals to God to state the catalogue of his crimes, or to bring forward his charges of guilt against him. The meaning, according to Schultens, is, “That catalogue ought to be great which has called down so many and so great calamities upon my head from heaven, when I am conscious to myself of being guilty of no offence.” God sorely afflicted…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 23-28Verses 23-28 Job begs to have his sins discovered to him. A true penitent is willing to know the worst of himself; and we should all desire to know what our transgressions are, that we may confess them, and guard against them for the future. Job complains sorrowfully of God's severe dealings with him. Time does not wear out the guilt of sin. When God writes bitter things against us, his design is to make us bring forgotten sins to mind, and so to bring us…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 22-23Job wanted God to call or summon him, so Job could defend himself. Or as an alternative, Job would speak to God. Then God would respond with the charges against Job. Since God did not choose the first option, Job started the second one (13:23). Eventually, God did call Job (38:1–3; 40:1–2). But Job could not reply (40:3–5).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 2323. The catalogue of my sins ought to be great, to judge from the severity with which God ever anew crushes one already bowed down. Would that He would reckon them up! He then would see how much my calamities outnumber them. sin?--singular, "I am unconscious of a single particular sin, much less many" [Umbreit].Read the comment
