Context of Jeremiah 46:7
5Why do I see them dismayed, turned away back? And their mighty ones are beaten down, and take to flight, and look not back? Terror [is] on every side, saith Jehovah. 6Let not the swift flee away, neither let the mighty man escape! — Toward the north, hard by the river Euphrates, they have stumbled and fallen. Who is this [that] riseth up as the Nile, whose waters toss themselves like the rivers? 8It is Egypt that riseth up as the Nile, and [his] waters toss themselves like the rivers; and he saith, I will rise up, I will cover the earth; I will destroy the city and the inhabitants thereof. 9Go up, ye horses, and drive furiously, ye chariots; and let the mighty men go forth: Cush and Phut that handle the shield, and the Ludim that handle the bow [and] bend it.

Commentaries on Jeremiah 46:7
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7Who is this that cometh up as a flood - The vast concourse of people is here represented as a river: for instance, the Jordan, suddenly swollen with the rains in harvest, rolling its waters along, and overflowing the whole country. A fine image to represent the incursions of vast armies carrying all before them. Such was the army of Pharaoh-necho in its march to Carchemish.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7In Jeremiah 46:3-6 we saw only a mighty army marshalling for battle, and its hasty flight. In Jeremiah 46:7-12 the prophet tells us at whose defeat we have been present. A flood - the Nile. The metaphor describing the advance of the Egyptian army is naturally drawn from the annual overflow of their own sacred stream. Whose waters are moved - literally, his waters toss to and fro as the rivers, the natural branches of the Nile in Lower Egypt.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7-8Despite Pharaoh Neco's boasting and his soldiers' intimidating presence, his tactics neither confused the enemy nor won the battle (compare 1 Kings 20:11).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 77. as a flood--(Jr 47:2; Is 8:7, 8; Da 11:22). The figure is appropriate in addressing Egyptians, as the Nile, their great river, yearly overspreads their lands with a turbid, muddy flood. So their army, swelling with arrogance, shall overspread the region south of Euphrates; but it, like the Nile, shall retreat as fast as it advanced.Read the comment
