Context of Exodus 34:4
2And be ready for the morning, and go up in the morning to mount Sinai, and stand there before me on the top of the mountain. 3And let no man go up with thee, neither shall any man be seen on all the mountain; neither shall sheep and oxen feed in front of that mountain. And he hewed two tables of stone like the first; and Moses rose up early in the morning and went up to mount Sinai, as Jehovah had commanded him, and took in his hand the two tables of stone. 5And Jehovah came down in the cloud, and stood beside him there, and proclaimed the name of Jehovah. 6And Jehovah passed by before his face, and proclaimed, Jehovah, Jehovah God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abundant in goodness and truth,

Commentaries on Exodus 34:4
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-35God granted the request of Moses (33:18). He showed Moses his goodness (34:1–9). He renewed the covenant (34:10–35). This renewal was a statement made by God alone. God promised to stay with his people, keeping his covenant promises even though they had broken the covenant and deserved death and abandonment (32:1–6).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 44. Moses ... took in his hand the two tables of stone--As Moses had no attendant to divide the labor of carrying them, it is evident that they must have been light, and of no great dimensions--probably flat slabs of shale or slate, such as abound in the mountainous region of Horeb. An additional proof of their comparatively small size appears in the circumstance of their being deposited in the ark of the most holy place (Ex 25:10).Read the comment
