Context of Acts 9:36
34And Peter said to him, Aeneas, Jesus, the Christ, heals thee: rise up, and make thy couch for thyself. And straightway he rose up. 35And all who inhabited Lydda and the Saron saw him, who turned to the Lord. And in Joppa there was a certain female disciple, by name Tabitha, which being interpreted means Dorcas. She was full of good works and alms-deeds which she did. 37And it came to pass in those days that she grew sick and died; and, having washed her, they put her in [the] upper room. 38But Lydda being near to Joppa, the disciples having heard that Peter was there, sent two men to him, beseeching him, Thou must not delay coming to us.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 36Now there was at Joppa - This was a sea-port town on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, about a day's journey from Jerusalem. It is supposed to be the same which is called in the Old Testament Japho, which belonged to the tribe of Dan, Joshua 19:46. It is at present called Jaffa, and is still a place of considerable note. A certain disciple named Tabitha - This word is more properly Syriac than Hebrew. Tebitho is the word in the Syriac version, and is…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 36At Joppa - This was a seaport town situated on the Mediterranean, in the tribe of Dan, about 30 miles south of Caesarea, and 45 northwest of Jerusalem. It was the principal seaport of Palestine; and hence, though the harbor was poor, it hind considerable celebrity. It was occupied by Solomon to receive the timber brought for the building of the temple from Tyre 2 Chronicles 2:16, and was used for a similar purpose in the time of Ezra, Ezra 3:7. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 36-43Verses 36-43 Many are full of good words, who are empty and barren in good works; but Tabitha was a great doer, no great talker. Christians who have not property to give in charity, may yet be able to do acts of charity, working with their hands, or walking with their feet, for the good of others. Those are certainly best praised whose own works praise them, whether the words of others do so or not. But such are ungrateful indeed, who have kindness shown…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 32-43These verses describe Peter’s traveling ministry in Judea, especially in towns along the seacoast. As he traveled, God gave him power to do miracles. Peter healed a man named Aeneas and raised a woman named Dorcas from the dead. Jesus had promised that his disciples would do such works (John 14:12). Luke often tells stories in pairs. For example, he tells of a man being healed and then a woman being healed (see Luke 13:10–17; 14:1–6). In this passage…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 36-3936-39. at Joppa--the modern Jaffa, on the Mediterranean, a very ancient city of the Philistines, afterwards and still the seaport of Jerusalem, from which it lies distant forty-five miles to the northwest. Tabitha ... Dorcas--the Syro-Chaldaic and Greek names for an antelope or gazelle, which, from its loveliness, was frequently employed as a proper name for women [Meyer, Olshausen].
