Context of 2 Timothy 2:3
1Thou therefore, my child, be strong in the grace which [is] in Christ Jesus. 2And the things thou hast heard of me in the presence of many witnesses, these entrust to faithful men, such as shall be competent to instruct others also. Take thy share in suffering as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. 4No one going as a soldier entangles himself with the affairs of life, that he may please him who has enlisted him as a soldier. 5And if also any one contend [in the games], he is not crowned unless he contend lawfully.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 3Endure hardness - He considers a Christian minister under the notion of a soldier, not so much for his continual conflicts with the world, the devil, and the flesh, for these are in a certain sense common to all Christians, but for the hardships and difficulties to which he must be exposed who faithfully preaches the Gospel of Christ.Read the comment

On the hardships which he endured himself, see the notes at 2 Corinthians 11:23-29. Soldiers often endure great privations. Taken from their homes and friends; exposed to…Read the comment
