Context of 2 Chronicles 33:14
12And when he was in affliction, he besought Jehovah his God, and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers, 13and prayed to him. And he was intreated of him and heard his supplication, and brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that Jehovah, he was God. And after this he built the outer wall of the city of David, on the west, toward Gihon, in the valley, even to the entrance of the fish-gate, and carried it round Ophel, and raised it up a very great height; and he put captains of war in all the fortified cities of Judah. 15And he removed the strange gods, and the idol out of the house of Jehovah, and all the altars that he had built on the mount of the house of Jehovah and in Jerusalem, and cast [them] out of the city. 16And he reinstated the altar of Jehovah, and sacrificed on it peace-offerings and thank-offerings, and commanded Judah to serve Jehovah the God of Israel.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 14He built a wall - This was probably a weak place that he fortified; or a part of the wall which the Assyrians had broken down, which he now rebuilt.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 14Rather, “he built the outer wall of the city of David on the west of Gihon-in-the-valley.” The wall intended seems to have been that toward the northeast, which ran from the vicinity of the modern Damascus gate across the valley of Gihon, to the “fish-gate” at the northeast corner of the “city of David.” We may gather from this verse that, late in his reign, Manasseh revolted from the Assyrians, and made preparations to resist them if they should attack…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 14-17Manasseh might have been fixing the walls when he was captured. His religious reforms were like Hezekiah's but not finished. Later, Josiah removed the temple altars that Manasseh had built (2 Kings 23:12).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1414. he built a wall without the city ... on the west side of Gihon ... even to the entering in at the fish gate--"The well-ascertained position of the fish gate, shows that the valley of Gihon could be no other than that leading northwest of Damascus gate, and gently descending southward, uniting with the Tyropoeon at the northeast corner of Mount Zion, where the latter turns at right angles and runs towards Siloam. The wall thus built by Manasseh on the…Read the comment
